Interdisciplinary Art Festival Tokyo

Artists & Performance Works

▶Japan
Sung Nam HAN
The director of Interdisciplinary Art Festival Tokyo (IAFT), Interdisciplinary Art Project Kobe (IAPK), and Art in Country of Tokyo (AICOT), Sung Nam HAN ruminates on the nature of “videowatching”, through which she produces a wide variety of works. Her artworks varies from interactive art installations using blue-screen keying to wearable / pocketable video works utilizing smartphones, small cameras or monitors. She has also produced AR works and art performances that combine video, play and dance based on the concept “Super Linear”.
http://jonart.net/

Blue Back Hole Off ≠ Online
Blue Back Hole Off ≠ Online is an audiovisual performance with a particular attention to the state of offline/online delivered by Sung Nam HAN, who has long been engaged in performance using video synthesis technique called blue-screen chroma keying.

Shuhei NISHIYAMA
Born in Kamakura, Japan, in 1976, Shuhei Nishiyama started making video works from 1998, driven by the influence he received from avant-garde cinema and video art. He explores the possibility of altering the structure of real life framed as video, through a close study of the media itself. In his works such as single-channel video, installations and performances, he divides the real world into image and sound and then reconstructs them, through which he engages himself in reflection of the reality by the logic of video and re-presentation of it.
http://www.shuhei2480.net/

A day : 10 mins times 144 units Shuhei NISHIYAMA/digital/10min/2020
The work divides a 24-hour footage of a sky into144 individual 10 minutes videos (160×90 pixels), displays them all simultaneously and compresses a day into 10 minutes, by which it expresses the lapse of the view.

Audio & Visual Confliction
Audio & Visual Confliction is a performance that simultaneously destroys and generates pictures and sounds by inverting the analog audio & video signals and then making them interfere reciprocally.

Kentaro TAKI
Born in 1973, Kentaro TAKI creates video collages, installations that project video onto architecture, and performance.

Nested in a Trice
Nested in a Trace is an improvisational dialogue between the artist and his other-self from a few seconds ago, staged and performed inside the feedback system set up by receiving images via online streaming.

Aberdeen, Hong Kong, 7 Days. Urich LAU / digital / 6min. / 2019/2020
Credits: Shot on Ricoh GR III, Camera, sound and editing by Urich Lau, Assisted editing by Peng Siyi
The video recounts the short 1-week work trip by the artist that was shot in mid-2019 in Aberdeen, Hong Kong. The video premiered as a web screening for WFH1.0 [https://www.instagram.com/wfh1.0/] and it was guest-curated by Jennifer Lam. Prior to this, the video was developed from the 7-Day / 7 Trailers series featured on the online exhibition “7-days-artist-in-real-life challenge, 14-days STAY HOME NOTICE” in 2020, curated by Yeo Shih Yun from INSTINC Art Space and launched on Artsy.net.

Topographical Code File: Peninsula「Izu-hantō」 Urich LAU / digital / 1min. / 2020
The video work shows the coastal line looking out to the Izu Peninsula,「Izu-hantō」, shot during a trip to Ito City in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan in 2016. With frequent earthquake swarms and tsunamis, the Izu Peninsula cuts across to the Philippines Sea Plate and is tectonically one of the most active on Earth. Ruminating on the pending disasters, the video is superimposed with disrupted algorithmic-generated subliminal images and geopolitical commentaries extracted from the Internet.

VJ Conference: Respiring Soma
The body as a performative medium and a virtual vessel that is collaborating and colliding concurrently with audiovisual and VJ manipulations. It is beyond the human nor the state of humanity, but on the prerequisite conditions for interactions in today’s technology-driven world.

TEOW Yue Han (INTER–MISSION) + Bernice Lee

Bernice Lee
Bernice Lee is a dance artist whose current practice “Ghosting” (and #ghosting as @bleelly on Instagram) is a danced practice of the “Female Gaze”, not as one way of seeing but as many ways of seeing. Loopholes
Loopholes is a system of exchanges between Bernice Lee and Teow Yue Han, each layer building on to the previous, arriving at a set of repeatable gestures and interruptions. With these exchanges, they give form to complex technologically-mediated means of embodiment exacerbated by the virus-as-choreographer.

Interdisciplinary Art Festival Tokyo
In 2009 IAFT was founded, as a reincarnation of “Far East Audio Visual Socialization(FEAVS),” to shatter the current norm of fixed spaces and audiences; and to discover artists who create new values going beyond the borders of artistic practice. We feature artists who engage in interdisciplinary practice, creating new values that connect people by introducing more dynamic art festivals that reflect contemporary society. Our purpose is to provide new and free perspectives that enrich people with inspiration – expanding the opportunity for the artists to present their works, by introducing experimental and avant-garde art. We aim for both creators and viewers to mutually share their feedback with each other: build the foundation for new art, and rejuvenate the art scene by featuring innovative artists with clear concepts and new visions.
